Up on the hill the Webb Estate is a garden suburb laid out by William Webb from 1888, its inner roads set out from 1907 and the plots built between 1912 and 1920 — around two hundred and thirty houses, individually designed, in Arts and Crafts, Tudor Revival and Neo-Georgian, set in mature planting on wide tree-lined roads. Upper Woodcote Village became a conservation area in 1973 and the designation was extended across the rest of the estate a decade later. Down towards Purley Cross and the station the picture changes to Victorian and Edwardian streets, and the outer roads and the ground between are largely semi-detached and interwar.
