Turn up, and the job is ready

You know the other kind of morning. Nobody sure what is happening, the materials not there, an hour stood about — then home having earned nothing, and the firm that wasted it still expecting you back on Thursday.

We are a building firm in Godstone. We have been running since 2005, and we bring in specialist trades on nearly every job. This page is about what it is like working for us, because that is the part nobody tells you before you commit a week to it.

Why firms keep coming back to us

Six things, and the reason for each. If they are not true when you work with us, tell us and we will put it right.

We agree your price before we quote the client

We walk the job with you first. You tell us what it takes and what you want for it, and that is the figure — it goes into our quote, not the other way round. Nobody comes back afterwards asking you to take less because the job was won on a keener number.

Your read on the programme goes in before it is set

If the sequence is wrong, or the time allowed is short, or something needs to happen before you can start, we would far rather hear it standing on site than on week two. You have done more of these than we have. The programme is better for you having looked at it.

The job is priced and programmed before you arrive

You are not standing in a car park on the phone while somebody works out what is happening. The scope is written, the materials are ordered and the sequence is set. That is the whole reason we survey properly.

One person to ring, and they answer

Not a switchboard and not a different number each job. You get the name of whoever is running that job, and they know your name too.

Paid per job, on terms agreed before you start

We tell you the terms up front rather than after. Your CIS and UTR go on file once, so the payment clears without a fortnight of emails.

We track your cover and card dates, and warn you

Your certificates sit on our system with their expiry dates. You get told before one runs out — not turned away at a gate on the morning.

The same firms, job after job

We are not looking for one body for one day. The trades we bring in are the ones we keep bringing in, because a firm that already knows how we run is worth more than a cheaper quote.

Work that is actually there

Commercial fit-out across the South East and domestic work around Godstone, running since 2005. Pub and bar refurbishments, offices, retail, schools, care homes, and houses within about ten miles of the office.

What we ask of you

Stated up front rather than sprung on you later. It is the same standard we are held to on commercial sites, and it is why our clients let us bring people in at all.

Your own public liability cover

We ask for the certificate and the renewal date, because the main contractor asks us for yours.

Employers’ liability, if you employ anyone

Required by law the moment you do, including labour-only. We check it once and keep the date.

Cards for whoever is actually on site

Not just the firm — the people. We record the expiry so you are not turned away at a gate.

A method statement and risk assessment per job

We tell you what the job needs before you write it, so you are not guessing at the scope.

Your CIS and UTR details

So the payment goes through correctly first time and nobody is chasing an invoice that was never valid.

Two recent jobs we can ring about

A main contractor or a homeowner. We do ring them — and we would expect you to ring ours.

Who we bring in

On our own books: roofing, carpentry, plastering, and kitchen and bathroom fitting. Brought in and managed: electrics, groundworks, plumbing, decorating and the other specialist trades. Commercial jobs run across the South East; domestic work stays close to the Godstone office.

SG Refurbishments Ltd has traded since 2005 — from Caterham for most of it, and from 27 High Street, Godstone since this spring. Company number 05629554. We carry £5m public liability and £5m employers’ liability.

Two minutes

Tell us about your firm

Only the trading name, your trade and one way to reach you are needed. Fill in the rest if you have it to hand; we will come back to you about anything missing.

Would rather talk? Ring the office on 01883 337 700 or email officeadmin@sgrefurb.co.uk.

Two minutes

Put your firm forward

Six short steps. Only the first one is required — if you have not got a figure or a date to hand, skip past it and we will pick it up when we ring.

1. Who are you?

The only two we genuinely need.

2. How do we reach you?

A phone number or an email — whichever you would rather we used.

3. Where do you work?

So we only ring you about jobs that are worth the journey.

4. Cover and cards

Rough is fine here. We confirm the certificates before the first job, not now.

5. A few checks

These are the ones main contractors ask us, so we have to be able to answer them for everyone on site. Say if something does not apply.

A straight answer here counts for more than a clean sheet. We would rather know.

6. Recent work

A couple of jobs and who we can ring about them. This is the part that gets you a call.

We use this to see whether there is work we can put your way, and nothing else. See the privacy notice.

Questions we get asked

Q.01What trades do SG Refurbishments subcontract?

Electrics, groundworks, plumbing and heating, decorating, flooring, tiling, scaffolding, glazing and drainage. Roofing, carpentry, plastering and kitchen and bathroom fitting are on our own books, though we still hear from good firms in those trades.

Q.02What areas do you work in?

Commercial work runs across the South East — London, Kent, Essex, Sussex and down to the coast. Domestic work stays within about ten miles of our Godstone office. If that is your patch, we would rather know you before we need you.

Q.03How do you pay subcontractors?

Per job, on terms agreed before you start, through CIS. We take your CIS and UTR details once and keep them on file so nothing is held up by paperwork later.

Q.04Do I need to be a limited company?

No. Sole traders are welcome. We ask the same things of everybody — public liability cover, cards for whoever is on site, and a method statement per job.

Q.05What happens after I send my details?

They go to the office and onto our subcontractor list with your trade, your patch and your renewal dates. When a job comes up that suits you, somebody rings. We will not pass your details to anyone else.
